He Sat Down
Hebrews 10:12 · Hebrews 8:10 · Hebrews 10:18
Every priest in the old system stood. Jesus sat down. A message on Hebrews, the finished work of Christ & why you can stop trying to earn what He already gave.
Every priest in the Old Testament had one thing in common. They never sat down.
There was no chair in the tabernacle. Day after day, year after year, they stood. Because standing is what you do when the work isn't finished.
So here's my question. If Jesus already sat down, why are so many of us still standing?
Standing Means the Work Isn't Done
The first readers of Hebrews were Jewish believers under pressure. They were tempted to drift back to what felt familiar: the temple, the priests, the sacrifices. Hebrews keeps telling them Jesus is better. Then it gives them a picture that proves it.
Hebrews 10:11–12 says, "Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God."
The priests stood because the work was never done. Jesus sat down because it is.
A Better Covenant
Most of us aren't tempted to offer a lamb. But we're tempted to keep performing anyway. Another clean week. Another apology worded just right. Another stretch of religious activity so we feel acceptable.
A system can manage behavior. It can't change a heart. Rules & repetition can make you act right, but they can't make you right.
That's why God promised something new. Hebrews 8:10 says, "I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts." Behavior management produces compliance. The finished work of Jesus produces transformation.
So ask yourself: If He has already sat down, what am I still trying to earn?
Stop Keeping the Copy
Hebrews calls the old tabernacle a copy, a shadow of the real thing. Jesus didn't serve in a replica. He entered heaven itself, once for all.
We build our own copies. The routine we perform so we feel like we did our part. The spiritual image we protect so nobody sees the unfinished places. The reputation at church we think keeps us in good standing.
Some of those things are good. None of them can get you in. Jesus already entered the real sanctuary for you.
No More Offerings
Here's the line that changes everything. Hebrews 10:18 says, "And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary."
No longer necessary.
So why do we keep bringing one? The extra serving after a failure, as if activity pays the debt. The silence we impose on ourselves until we feel we've suffered enough. Confessing the same sin over & over, hoping this time it finally sticks. The quiet bargain: God, I'll do better if You won't hold this against me.
Those are all offerings. He doesn't need any of them.
Trying to prove you deserve a gift is exhausting. Grace ends that. You don't serve God so He'll keep loving you. You serve because in Christ you're already loved.
This Week
Here's my challenge. Write down one offering you keep bringing, the thing you do to feel forgiven or acceptable. Every time you catch yourself reaching for it this week, say out loud: He sat down. Then come to God without it.
The priests stood because the work was never done. Jesus sat down because it is.
Can I invite you to stop standing & rest in what Jesus already finished?
