The Crowd in the Stands
Hebrews 12:1 · Hebrews 11:13 · 1 Thessalonians 4:13
All Saints Day is coming. A message on Hebrews 12:1 for anyone missing the people who handed them the faith & wondering how to keep running.
Picture the last mile of a marathon.
Your legs are gone. Your lungs are on fire. Every part of you wants to sit down on the curb & quit. Then you look up & the stands are full. People are shouting your name. Some of them ran this exact course years ago. They know what this mile feels like.
That's the picture the Bible gives you for your life of faith. You are not running alone. There's a crowd in the stands.
The Great Cloud
Hebrews 12:1 says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
Who's in that cloud? Read Hebrews 11. Abraham, who left home without a map. Moses, who chose God over a palace. Rahab, who had a past & a future. Ordinary, messy people who kept trusting God when it didn't make sense.
This time of year many churches pause for All Saints Day to remember them. Not just the famous names, but the grandmother who prayed for you every night. The Sunday school teacher who knew your name. The friend you buried too soon.
They Finished Without Seeing It
Here's what surprised me. Hebrews 11:13 says, "All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance."
They didn't get the ending they hoped for in this life. They kept running anyway.
That's not failure. That's faith. Some of the people you miss most never saw their prayers answered. Some of those prayers were for you. They're being answered right now.
Grief With Hope
Missing them is not a lack of faith. Jesus wept at a grave.
But 1 Thessalonians 4:13 says, "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope."
Notice Paul doesn't say don't grieve. He says grieve differently. Grieve like someone who knows the story isn't over. The people who died in Christ aren't lost. They're just ahead of you on the course.
Drop What Slows You Down
The writer says throw off what hinders. Runners don't wear backpacks. What are you carrying that the race doesn't need? Bitterness. An old grudge. A secret sin. Fear of what people think.
Then fix your eyes on Jesus. The crowd cheers you on, but Jesus is the finish line. He ran the whole course first, cross & all. Now He's waiting at the end.
This Week
Here's my challenge. Write down the names of two or three people who handed you the faith. If they're living, send them a note this week & tell them thank you. If they're gone, thank God for them out loud. Then ask one honest question: who am I running in front of? Because one day, someone will name you.
The people who ran before you aren't gone. They're in the stands & they're cheering you home.
Can I invite you to lace up again today & run the race marked out for you, eyes on Jesus?
