Where Are the Other Nine?

ByJustin Steubs•Free to preach, just credit FreshSermon.org

Ten men got the miracle of their lives. Nine of them never said thank you.

That's not a story about bad people. It's a story about normal people. Which means it might be a story about us.

Ten Men Outside the Village

In Luke 17, Jesus walks toward a village & ten men with leprosy stand at a distance. They can't come closer. Leprosy meant you lost your skin, your family, your job & your place in town. You lived on the outside.

They shout, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"

Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests. On the way, they're healed. Skin restored. Life handed back.

Then Luke 17:15-17 says, "One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, 'Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?'"

Blessed Isn't the Same as Thankful

All ten were blessed. Only one was thankful.

The nine weren't wicked. They were busy. They had places to go. Family to hug. A life to restart. They probably meant to say thanks later.

That's how gratitude usually dies. Not from rebellion. From distraction.

We do the same thing. We pray hard when the diagnosis comes, when the money's short, when the kid won't come home. Then God answers & we just move on to the next need.

Jesus noticed. He still notices.

Thankful in All Circumstances

Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Notice he said in all circumstances. Not for all circumstances. You don't have to thank God for cancer or a layoff or a funeral. But even in those seasons, there is still something to thank Him for.

His presence. His promises. The people who showed up. The breath in your lungs this morning.

Gratitude doesn't pretend the pain isn't real. It just refuses to let the pain be the only thing you see.

Gratitude Goes Back

Here's what the one man did that the others didn't. He turned around.

Gratitude isn't just a feeling. It's a direction. It goes back to the Giver.

Look what Jesus told him in verse 19: "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." All ten got healed skin. The one who came back got a whole life made right with God.

The nine got a miracle. The one got a relationship.

Psalm 107:1 says, "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." That's the reason underneath every other reason. Even when life isn't good, He is.

This Week

Here's my challenge. Before Thanksgiving gets here, go back.

Take ten minutes alone with God this week & name ten specific things He's done for you. Not "my family." Say the moment. The night He got you through. The bill that got paid. The friend who called at just the right time.

Then pick one person who's been part of God's answer in your life & tell them thank you. Text it. Call. Write it on a card. Don't be one of the nine who meant to.

Don't just be blessed. Be the one who comes back.

Can I invite you to turn around today & bring your thanks straight to the One who gave you everything?
